IPCC report: Eight years to fight climate change May. 16, 2007 - The conclusion from the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report issued on 4 May is that technologies are available at a low cost to significantly reduce greenhouse gases. Used since the 1990s to replace ozone-depleting CFCs they are found mostly in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, but also in windows, fire extinguishers, insulating foam or even sport shoes. But they have now also been incriminated in global warming. The European Parliament adopted today two new laws to reduce, or prohibit, their use. This should help Member States to meet their commitments under the Kyoto Protocol. Mar. 16, 2006 - In January a CO2 heat pump jointly developed by the companies Stiebel Eltron (Germany) and Awtec AG (Switzerland) received the "Swiss Technology Award 2006" as well as a special award of the "Stiftung für Natur und Umwelt". Recently finished: EU Project GEOCOOL Mar. 06, 2006 - Within the 5FP project GEOCOOL (Ground Source Heat Pumps System for Cooling and Heating in the South European Region) a conventional roof-top chiller and a ground coupled reversible heat pump unit to provide cooling and heating to a series of offices had been monitored over a one year period. The heat pump unit is using propane as refrigerant. Conciliation agreement on fluorinated greenhouse gases Feb. 07, 2006 - The Commission welcomes the agreement reached by the European Parliament and the Council in Conciliation to reduce emissions of fluorinated greenhouse gases. Fluorinated gases are extremely powerful and long-lived greenhouse gases used in refrigeration, air conditioning, fire-fighting, electrical transmission systems and various industry processes. Reducing their emissions is a requirement under the Kyoto Protocol and will help the EU and its Member States meet their emission targets under the Protocol. Jan. 13, 2006 - The first annual project report covering the period 1 October 2004 - 30 September 2005 was submitted to the European Commission in October 2005. Now, the executive summary of this report is publicly available. Natural Refrigeration Award 2005 Dec. 23, 2005 - At the annual meeting of the European refrigeration association Eurammon on 24 November 2005 in Frankfurt the Natural Refrigeration Award has been awarded for the first time for the best academic thesis paper on natural refrigerants. IIR Conference in Vicenza - Short summary Oct. 18, 2005 - Italy - Two conferences arranged by the International Institute of Refrigeration - Thermophysical Properties and Transfer Processes of Refrigerants (TP) and Commercial Refrigeration (CR) - were this year held with one day overlap at the same venue, at the Vicenza Campus of the Padua University School of Engineering in north-east Italy. Micro refrigeration Oct. 18, 2005 - USA - Researchers at Purdue University are developing new micro-channel heat exchangers for cooling appliances. The heat exchangers consist of a copper plate containing numerous channels. IIR Conference on Ammonia Systems Oct. 18, 2005 - Macedonia - The IIR "Ammonia Refrigeration Systems, Renewal and Improvements" conference was organised by Professor Risto Ciconkov of the University of Skopje, Macedonia.The conference was held in Ohrid, a 6000-year-old town, and was attended by delegates from 28 different countries. Experiences from using R723 Oct. 18, 2005 - Denmark - R 723 is a mixture of ammonia (60 %) and dimethyl ether (DME) (40 %) which, due to the DME, has a good miscibility with oil. Modular Flat Tube heat eXchanger (MFTeX) Sep. 07, 2005 - The Austrian company BC GmbH offers an entire aluminium heat exchanger for refrigeration and air conditioning systems, that can save costs for a heat pump considerably. Jul. 08, 2005 - The carbon dioxide interest group (c-dig) held a seminar in Uusikaupunki in Finland on 14-15th April. CO2 heat pump for hydronic heating systems Jun. 22, 2005 - Sweden - The first CO2 heat pump for the Swedish market has now been released by the Swedish company Ahlsell.
